PTAC vs. through-the-wall: what's the difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing. A PTAC (packaged terminal air conditioner) is a self-contained heating and cooling unit housed in a single chassis that slides into a wall sleeve. It combines both functions in a single unit, making it a popular choice in apartments and co-op buildings throughout New York City. A through-the-wall AC system, by contrast, is a dedicated cooling-only unit installed through an exterior wall, typically paired with a separate heating source.

Both systems have their place depending on your building's existing infrastructure, your co-op's requirements, and your comfort priorities.
